Fancy a week of walking the hills in and around Wigtownshire, the Galloway Hills and the Solway Firth? Come and stay with us at our Kirkcudbright Holiday Cottages in May and take advantage of Newton Stewart’s Walking Festival.
Now in its 16th year, this year’s festival runs from Friday 11th to Thursday 17th May and has something for all levels of fitness and hill walking experience. There are 30 routes over the seven days and all receive a walk grading. They range from easy (less than 6 miles) to very strenuous (12 miles +) and consider the terrain, distance and ascent involved.
Newton Stewart Walking Festival is run by a group of volunteers who share an enthusiasm and love for Galloway and the great walking experiences it offers. The town itself has been designated a Walkers are Welcome Town. This is a network of over 100 towns UK-wide that promote walking and their individual character.
You can search by date or grading on their comprehensive website and find something that suits you and your family’s interests. Each walk is led by a guide and some have additional guides with a specialist knowledge. Subjects include birdlife, astronomy, history, geology and archaeology.
The cost of each walk includes transport between Newton Stewart and the start and end points of the walk. After enjoying the great outdoors you can head back to your Galloway Holiday Cottage at High Kirkland for some rest and relaxation.
The Galloway Hills
The website also has invaluable information for walkers on the Galloway Hills, whether taking part in the festival or not. This includes information on equipment, terrain and emergency provisions. The Galloway Hills form part of the Southern Uplands and can be categorised in six groups: The ‘Awful Hand’; The Dungeon Range; The Kells; The Minnigaff Hills; The Carsphairn Range; and The Solway Hills. Each have their own characteristics and challenges.
There’s more than just walking during the seven days. There are evening events including dinners, talks by experts and an open evening by a local outdoor equipment specialist. These all contribute to the buzz around the festival and provide ample opportunities to meet like-minded people from near and far.
