We know it’s not even Christmas but some of us are already in mind of love, romance and Valentine’s Day.
Our Kirkcudbright Holiday Cottages at High Kirkland are the perfect place for a romantic getaway. With beautiful landscapes, inspiration by Robert Burns and award winning food and drink, we couldn’t think of anywhere better.
There are several stories about the origin of Valentine’s Day. One is that he was a priest in ancient Rome who performed secret marriage ceremonies after the emperor decided married men made terrible soldiers. After being sent to prison, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. Before his execution on 14th February, he sent her a love letter signed ‘from your Valentine’.
Thankfully nowadays it’s much easier to proclaim your love…
For many of us, Robert Burns says it best in his love poems, including Ae Fond Kiss and My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose. The Bard had strong connections to Kirkcudbright, frequenting the King’s Arms Inn, which is now a private home. A subsequent owner found a poem under the wallpaper that is thought to have been scrawled by Burns. And it’s said that he wrote the Burns Grace (sometimes called the Selkirk Grace) while staying at another local hotel, the Selkirk Arms.
Romance in Kirkcudbright Today
You can still visit The Selkirk Arms today, which has its own Burns Room complete with portraits, plaques and poetry of the national Bard. It’s one of the many hotels and restaurants in the town where you can book a table for your romantic dinner for two. You’ll find a helpful listing on the Visit Kirkcudbright website.
If you’re booked into Heron View, you’ll have access to the luxury hot tub. It includes high power jets and a deluxe Roman bath lounger, as well as mood effect underwater lighting. What could be better than a relaxing soak under the stars as you take in the views from our Galloway Holiday Cottages.
You’ll find everything you need in and around Kirkcudbright for the special person in your life from flowers and chocolates to jewellery and other gifts. And a long weekend at our South West Scotland Holiday Cottages will guarantee they’ll feel especially loved and cherished.
