If you thought Edinburgh was the only place to put on a spectacular Tattoo and Firework Display during the summer, then think again. Every August, Kirkcudbright pulls out all the stops to put on an amazing night of entertainment culminating in an awe-inspiring firework display in the night sky. This year’s floodlit Kirkcudbright Tattoo and Firework Display takes places on Saturday 26th August and is sure to delight the expectant crowds lining the town centre streets.
Kirkcudbright Tattoo and Firework Display is the star event of the town’s Summer Activities programme. Every year, there is a fantastic series of events throughout the summer season for the whole family, including farmers’ markets, a jazz festival, a children’s festival, a country fair and the arts and crafts trail. All make sure that Kirkcudbright is the region’s go-to destination, bursting with visitors and locals alike enjoying high quality entertainment and fare.
The Summer Activities programme celebrates local talent and produce, as well as showcasing the best of what the surrounding area has to offer. Weekly Scottish nights every Thursday are a must-see for anyone who is moved by the skirl of the pipes and swirl of Highland dancer’s skirts – and who is intrigued by the world-famous, unbeaten Tug O’War team!
The Tattoo brings together performers of all ages from Kirkcudbright and further afield and entertains the audience of every generation. Processing along St Cuthbert Street, you’ll be captivated by country dancers, award-winning pipes and drums and the cadets field gun race, which is exhausting just to watch! The crowds gather in the shadow of the 16th century MacLellan’s Castle with the town’s summer activities logo projected on to its side and delight in the performances of all the groups taking part.
The climax of the evening is a lone piper playing to the hushed crowd as the light fades before the explosive firework display fills the sky with light and colour. It’s just a five-minute drive back to your cottage at High Kirkland to reflect on an exhilarating evening and make plans for the rest of your holiday.
The Kirkcudbright Tattoo and Firework Display takes place on Saturday 26th August from 7.30-10.30pm. Further information can be found at the Kirkcudbright Summer Activities Charity Shop on St Mary Street (open Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Saturday 10am-4pm) or on the Kirkcudbright Summer Activities website.
