One of Dumfries and Galloway’s most famous contemporary sons is David Coulthard, brought up in nearby Twynholm. The picturesque village is just a couple of miles west of our Kirkcudbright Holiday Cottages at High Kirkland.
The Formula 1 racing star comes from good stock. His grandfather competed in the Monte Carlo Rally and his father was Scottish National Champion of kart racing. He was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy before embarking on his illustrious racing career, winning three grand prixs.
Fans of David and of Formula 1 can visit The David Coulthard Museum, originally opened by his proud parents.
As well as a wealth of memorabilia from David’s time as a racing champion, visitors can also experience the star attraction: Scotland’s only full scale, full motion F1 simulator. F1 drivers before a big race and by junior drivers coming up through the ranks make use of simulators just like this. You can book your ride in advance and also purchase an annual pass giving you unlimited access!
It’s described as an ‘exhilarating drive-of-your-life’ with the car lifting as you round the corners and feel yourself hurtling around the bends.
Trophies and Memorabilia
It sits alongside medals, trophies and photos, as well as David’s early go karts, F1 cars and the Mercedes Benz DTM AGM race car he last drove in 2012 (David’s interest in racing began when he received a go kart from his father for his 12th birthday). The museum boasts the world’s most complete collection of race cars and memorabilia of any F1 driver, past or present. Some of the most fascinating items are the personal letters, painting and press cuttings brought together in the museum. David’s race suits and helmets are also on display.
The museum is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and is right next to the Cocoabean Chocolate Factory, that we wrote a blog post about here. It’s a must for any motor racing enthusiast, whatever their age.
After visiting, we’d advise driving a little more sedately than David back to our Galloway Holiday Cottages at High Kirkland. We’d like you to enjoy the rest of your break with us without getting to know the local constabulary!
